Usul al-Qira'at
The general rules a reading applies wherever their conditions occur.
Usul are the rules a reading applies consistently rather than word by word: settle them once and they hold wherever their conditions appear.
They cover the lengths of madd, how hamzah is realised or eased, imalah — inclining a fathah towards a kasrah — idgham where letters meet, and the treatment of the ha’ of the pronoun, among others.
Learning the usul of a riwayah first is what makes the rest manageable: once the general rules are settled, only the exceptions remain.
