Waqf & Ibtida'

Where a reciter stops, and where they resume, changes how the words are understood. This is why the science of waqf and ibtida’ sits beside tajweed rather than after it.

The scholars classify a stop by how complete the sense is at that point — tamm, kafi, hasan or qabih — and the marks in the Mushaf are a summary of that judgement, not a separate rule.

A reciter who must take a breath mid-verse needs to know where stopping leaves the meaning sound, and where resuming requires going back a few words.
